Deep Dive: Meet the New Song Meter SM5 & SM5BAT

In this workshop, we’ll take a close look at the NEW Song Meter SM5 and SM5BAT recorders from Wildlife Acoustics, covering their hardware, physical and practical characteristics, and how they compare to other Song Meters. We’ll then explore configuration, including how to program multiple channels (both ultrasonic and acoustic) to record simultaneously. Finally, we’ll finish up with a peek at what’s coming next for the SM5 family, including new accessories, hardware, and features planned for 2026 and 2027.

Paul Howden-Leach

Paul has worked as a professional ecologist for over 25 years and has extensive experience conducting surveys for protected species, including bats, amphibians, reptiles, terrestrial mammals, and birds. He specializes in bats and bird bioacoustics and identification through sound and sonogram analysis. Paul is a qualified teacher and has taught at numerous further and higher education institutions worldwide, ranging from formal lecture settings to in-field active sound recording training. Additionally, he occasionally serves as a consultant and advisor to the BBC and other television production companies.
