Developing an Acoustic Bat Survey Study Plan (Beginner)

We will discuss the pros and cons of acoustic bat surveys and how to use them most effectively. We’ll also review the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) standard protocol for acoustic bat “presence/probable absence” surveys and go through the exercise of planning one. Topics covered will include calculating the necessary level of effort, defining the scope of work, estimating potential bat habitat remotely, selecting sampling sites, preparing a proposed sample site map, and drafting and submitting a study plan for approval. By the end of this class, you’ll be able to plan a survey on your own. We recommend taking this class before Mike’s other class, “Preparing & Deploying Acoustic Detectors in the Field.”

Mike Fishman
Michael is a Certified Wildlife Biologist, Professional Wetland Scientist, and TWS Fellow. He is co-founder and co-owner of Edgewood Environmental Consulting, LLC, specializing in natural resources surveys, impact assessments, and permitting.
Michael currently serves on the Board of Directors for the North American Society for Bat Research (NASBR). He has held past chair and president positions and served as a founding member of the Northeast Bat Working Group (NEBWG), among other esteemed roles.
Much of his work has focused on bat surveys, research, and conservation efforts. He has conducted acoustic surveys for over 20 years and developed two bat acoustic training courses, one of which received recognition from the USFWS for training related to the U.S. Federal Protocol Bat Acoustic Surveys. We're excited to have him on board!
